description:
Nu-metal is a style of rock that emerged in the 1990s and lasted through the early 2000s. It incorporated influences ranging from heavy metal, alternative rock, grunge, and punk rock to funk and hip hop. Songs were usually built from distorted syncopated guitar riffs, included vocals in the form of singing, screaming, or rapping, and sometimes featured DJ sampling and turntable scratching or other electronic sounds. Lyrics were often angry (sometimes whiny). Nu metal bands include Linkin Park, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. Many other artists have worked Nu metal into their sound including Tank and the Bangas, Poppy, and Rina Sawayama.
notes (from def mech):
this genre is admittedly silly since it's almost a parody of itself (why not just do a metal battle?), and i think nu metal songs succeed most when they lean into fusing other idioms like DJ/trip hop sounds or deviating from pop song form. it seemed like a fun idea because it doesn't take much to take an average nu metal song and make it """actually good""". have fun!
