Aiming to embody the vibe from some of my fav keyboard/synth parts in the black metal music that I grew up listening to. They mostly seemed to be using y2k-era workstations / rom synths like Korg Triton / Roland XP series etc.
Most of the sounds I used are from software GM libraries + a Korg 05R/W and Novation K-Station.
This might not be minimal and ambient enough to 100% match the genre, but could take place in the same dungeon at least haha.
Mega mega descriptioncore below, it was just fun to write a mini pulp fantasy tale to go along with it.
----
The battles were fierce and seemed to be without end, as we traversed the caverns of the ancient city; encountering terrifying, impossible creatures, and the pale collectors- nearly as devoid of humanity: eyes bright with greed as they plundered the possessions of the dead, eager to rob and kill any who might cross their paths. We met them all and fought with bravery, for our mission was just.
Though time had long lost any meaning to us, we pressed onward, harrowed but resolute; our armor caked in layers of ancient dust and the stale blood of our foes, congealed into a filthy paste.
We believed it to be the 9th day of our journey when we reached our destination, our mission: to dispel a potent, evil magic and free the trapped souls of millions. Before us was an exquisite gallery of death, adorned with the most rich of materials and breathtaking detail; we had found the mythical tomb of the mad tyrant.
Here was the final resting place of an obsessively petty ruler of these lands. It is said that his fear of losing power was so great, that he employed a wizard to steal the souls of all his subjects, leveling the entire city in the process and transforming it into a vast crypt, so that he might be accompanied by his subjects, even in death.
We proceeded past the threshold, senses heightened, the blood pounding in our ears as we stepped cautiously further into the darkness. There was a click followed by a whispered curse; one of us must have stepped on a hidden switch in the floor.
The sound of a horn echoed around us, as though announcing the presence of royalty.. and the room began to tremble violently; debris and stones from the crypt were dislodged and falling upon our heads! We took shelter in an alcove, though it was nearly impossible to see in the darkness and the dust.
Dreadful sounds emanated from the stones as they fell around us, like human voices, but dry and empty. Gazing down, we it was just possible to make out that every surface of the stones were carved with lifelike human faces; contorted visages, each screaming in a different monotone as they shattered on the smooth marble by our feet.
The reality of this was just beginning to sink-in when a biting chill swept through the chamber; an indescribably dire and powerful presence had arrived, and it enveloped us totally. Out of instinct, we went to draw weapons, but found that our bodies would not respond, seeming to be frozen in position through some enchantment.
Helpless and mute, we observed as a frail figure emerged from a nearby coffin. Impossibly thin and boney, their hair was matted with flaps of skin dangling haphazardly.. yet animated and spry as any person, with a disarmingly friendly gait. The living corpse deftly scratched a symbol in the dirt with their crooked little cane and whispered inaudibly for a moment..
The quaking ended as abruptly as it had begun and dead silence loomed in its wake. A blindly brilliant burst of blue fire erupted all around us, though we felt nothing of the flames. Our bodies burned steadily and dissipated into the freezing air of the chamber, yet we were somehow conscious to observe the transformation.
As the glow faded and the keeper of the crypt returned to their place of rest, the reality became clear-- we had been observing this take place from the walls, or more accurately, we *were* the walls. A hearty cackle echoed as they closed the lid and we were alone.. forever.
