Yes, the NEXXT format requires you to use a tileset to fill in the main image, so indeed it is limited to a spritesheet of sorts. In this and previous cases, i found most optimal to make the tiles on the run according to what i need, rather than get a prefab. It winds up looking a bit blockier and geometric, but it's not a problem if you do it right! I should probably record myself making a NEXXT entry to share the process.
